In conjunction with the public readings of extracts from his novel that took place at the end of August/start of September 2020, I translated a shortened version of Sergey’s article for RFE/RL from a couple of years ago. The young man got in touch because the plot of the novel is incredibly similar to the events he’d been living through for the past few years, and reading this article alongside the novel is an eery and saddening experience. Egor’s case is individually tragic, but represents a far greater failure of the Russian judicial system – one that Sergey has been trying to document in his work.
